GBSN Advisory Board Member Harry Broadman, Managing Director/Chief Economist at PricewaterhouseCoopers, recently shared these two useful publications with me (click on the titles to download the reports). The first, "China: Pearls, Pitfalls and Possibilities", constitutes the inaugural issue of Marketmap, a new PwC magazine that focuses exclusively on emerging markets. Subsequent issues of Marketmap, already underway, will have a country- or region-specific focus, a sectoral concentration, or explore cross-cutting themes.
The second, "Investing in Africa", is a recent issue of PwC's long-standing 10 Minutes series, which provides succinct, practical analysis for business decision-making.
Both highlight the rapid growth that is occurring in these markets and the importance of skilled local talent to drive economic growth and success.
The first advises: "Bring local Chinese talent into the business and bring your leadership to the streets."
On going into Africa, the 10 Minutes piece suggests the importance of cultivating local entrepreneurs: "An integral component of Coca-Cola’s growth strategy is the "5 by 20” program, designed to empower 5 million women entrepreneurs worldwide to act as Coca-Cola’s "micro-distribution centers” by 2020. The company has honed this strategy in Africa where it has developed an extensive network of women distributors to supply retailers in far-flung corners—often by foot, bicycle, or pushcart."
