My Final Internship

Nicole ZefranHaving graduated from Ohio University in 2011 with a Bachelors in Organizational Communication, I have been desperately trying to gain experience and get my foot in the door. Generally, interns are students, but since it’s been a challenge for me to land a position, I have been interning for the last three years. Prior to interning at GBSN, I completed 3 other internships in the non-profit and government sector. I am excited to say that this is my last internship since GBSN has officially hired me as their Network Assistant. Many of us newly graduated youth have such a hard time landing a job after school. That is why I continued to apply for internships to build my resume and gain as much experience as possible.

A lot of times communications internships consist of making pitch calls, copy editing articles, updating publications, getting coffee, filing papers, etc. Comparing my internship with GBSN to my past ones, I have to say I gained the most skills and knowledge here. Working under Page was extremely beneficial for me, mainly because she took the time to sit down and teach me new things whilst always giving me feedback on my work. From the beginning, Page slowly but surely gave me substantial tasks to do, like writing blogs, writing press releases, updating the website by creating and editing html documents from DreamWeaver, and executing media outreach and PR tasks for various programs and campaigns. As time went on, I felt more and more part of the team.

Working on the 2013 Annual Conference on Education, Employment and Entrepreneurship was one of the highlights of my internship. I worked closely with Page and the rest of GBSN team to recruit and communicate with participants, communicate with speakers, create and update conference marketing materials, update the conference website, and provide support to many logistical tasks that went into planning the event. My favorite part of the internship was having the opportunity to work on the website. Prior to joining GBSN, I had little to no experience with web design and DreamWeaver. Now, among many, I can add another skill set to my resume. I also had the opportunity to roll out this years MBA+ Challenge Video Contest. Page gave me full ownership over executing the promotion and media outreach after our winners were picked.

Finally, I am grateful to be a part of an organization with such an inspiring mission. The passion and dedication that the GBSN team has to improve management education in the developing world through creating and implementing capacity building programs and working with our elite international network of business schools, is truly inspiring. I am happy to say that I learned so much and gained so many skills that I can add to my resume through this internship and am extremely excited and eager to continue working for GBSN as their new Network Assistant!

Nicole Zefran interned with GBSN from January 2013 to June 2013 and is staying on as GBSN’s new Network Assistant.
