GBSN Welcomes Three New Board Members

Guy PfeffermannOn behalf of GBSN, I am proud to announce the election of three new members to our Board of Directors: Dennis Hanno, Provost and Senior Vice President at Babson College, Joe Baczko, CEO of Major Global Retailing/ Service Companies, and Kamel Lazaar, Founder and Chairman of SwiCorp, an investment-banking firm active in the MENA region. 

Joe Baczko brings to GBSN invaluable management experience, as well as deep knowledge of international business and retail marketing. Before his last post as Dean, Joe held various leadership roles for leading fortune 500 companies, Blockbuster and Toys R Us. He has a proven track record in developing innovative strategies for global expansion and building world class organizations.

As the leader of one of the top business schools in the world, Dennis Hanno is a strong advocate for management education for the developing world. Dennis brings experience with entrepreneurship education, as well as deep knowledge of Africa, where he has been running programs in a number of countries. He has been a long-time supporter of GBSN and I look forward to having his energy and wisdom on our board.

Kamel Lazaar brings over 30 years of experience in international banking and finance. Kamel has developed Swicorp into a unique investment banking firm active in the MENA region that focuses on financial engineering, privatizations, mergers & acquisitions, project financing and related investment banking activities. He is the founder of the Maghreb Economic Forum (MEF), a think tank whose objective is the economic integration of the Maghreb countries.


Joe Baczko

 Joe Baczko, CEO of Major Global Retailing/ Service Companies

Over a business career spanning thirty years, Joe Baczko held a number of senior executive positions in leading international companies. He has advised private equity firms on international acquisitions in areas of consumer services and specialty retailing.

From 1997 to 2001, he was Chairman and CEO of Frank's Nursery & Crafts, the largest domestic specialty retailer of lawn and garden products, acquired in a leveraged buy-out, which he led. From 1993 to 1997, Baczko was a private investor associated with the Cypress Group, LLC, a major private equity firm, and subsequently the lead investor in Frank's Nursery & Crafts.

As President and COO of Blockbuster Entertainment from 1991-1993, Baczko helped lead that company to significant growth, both in the US and internationally, and in its market leadership worldwide, through the expansion of company-owned operations, acquisitions and franchising.

Baczko was the founding President of Toys R Us –International, leading that company's successful global expansion from 1983 to 1990. He established major retail operations in Canada, France, Germany, UK, Spain, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Japan. The growth of Toys R Us - International became a textbook case for successful global expansion in specialty retailing.

From 1979 to 1983, as CEO of Max Factor-Europe, Mr. Baczko directed that company's UK- based manufacturing and marketing operations throughout Europe and developed a network of joint ventures in the Middle East, Africa, Japan, and South Asia. Prior to 1979, Mr. Baczko held various management positions with W.R. Grace and in merchant banking.

In addition to his business career, Baczko was recently Dean of the Lubin School of Business at Pace University. For ten years, he was Chairman of the Board of Visitors for the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University. He is currently Chairman Emeritus. He was also member of the University's Board of Regents for eight years, the last two of which he served as Vice-Chairman.

Baczko is a graduate of Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service and holds an MBA from Harvard. Baczko was a Captain in the US Marine Corps and served in Vietnam. He and his wife have three adult children and reside in Alexandria, Virginia.


Dennis HannoDennis Hanno, Provost and Senior Vice President, Babson College

Dennis Hanno has held senior leadership positions at Babson College since arriving in 2006. Currently, he serves as Babson’s Provost, Senior Vice President, and Professor of Accounting. He also serves as the Executive Director of the Babson-Rwanda Entrepreneurship Center (BREC). Previously, he served as the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Matters in the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and on the faculty of Boston College.

A vocal advocate for responsible management education, Hanno serves on the Board of the Globally Responsible Leadership Initiative, a worldwide network dedicated to developing a next generation of responsible leaders. He also plays an active role in the United Nations PRME movement.

As an accomplished accounting educator, he was namedEducator of the Yearby the Massachusetts Society of Certified Public Accountants, and is actively involved in the accounting profession. He most recently was named one of Boston’s 50 on Fire for revolutionizing undergraduate education and for the active role he plays in the Boston and Babson communities.

Hanno leads Babson’s many initiatives in Africa, focusing on creating a more entrepreneurial environment across the continent. As the executive director of the Babson-Rwanda Entrepreneurship Center, the national host for Global Entrepreneurship Week, he oversees the work of the center’s in-country staff.

He has empowered thousands of youths in four African countries through a unique curriculum he has developed called From Ideas to Actionas founder and director of the Babson Entrepreneurial Leadership Academies.

Hanno earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Notre Dame, his Master of Science degree in accounting from Western New England College, and his Ph.D. in accounting from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.


Kamel LazaarKamel Lazaar, Founder & Chairman, Swicorp

Kamel Lazaar is the founder and Chairman of Swicorp, an investment-baking firm active in the MENA region. With more than 30 years of experience in international banking and finance, he has firmly established Swicorp’s reputation as an innovative provider of business solutions and developed Swicorp into a unique investment banking firm active in the MENA region with focus on financial endeavors (financial engineering, privatizations, mergers & acquisitions, project financing and related investment banking activities) and one of the largest private equity firms in the region.

Before founding Swicorp in 1987, Lazaar was Vice‐President at Citibank in North Africa and Saudi Arabia, and was part of the Citibank team that founded the Saudi-American Bank (Samba) in Saudi Arabia.

Lazaar holds a Masters of Business Administration in Finance from the Institut Supérieur de Gestion in Tunis and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Tunis.

Kamel Lazaar is a philanthropist, collector of contemporary Arab art and a very active advocate of the promotion of Arab art and culture through the Kamel Lazaar Foundation. He is the initiator of the largest visual art magazine in the region, Ibraaz, as well as the founder of the Maghreb Economic Forum (MEF), a think tank whose objective is the economic integration of the Maghreb countries.
