The University of Stellenbosch Business School (USB) has joined the ranks of some of the world’s leading business schools by being accepted as a member of the Global Business School Network (GBSN), a non-profit organisation that aims to promote and strengthen management education for emerging markets. USB is only the third business school in South Africa to become a GBSN member, and the fourth in Africa.

College Park, MD, August 17, 2009 — The University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business today announced it was named the newest member of the Global Business School Network (GBSN), joining more than 30 other world-leading business schools that make up the international nonprofit organization’s membership. The schools in the network are dedicated to building business leaders in developing economies and share resources and thought leadership to accomplish this mission.

In recent years the need for leadership and management training has moved to the forefront of discussions about Human Resources in Health in Sub-Saharan Africa. While official and private aid programs continue to place the main emphasis on science, technology and supply chain, it has also become clear that health services delivery and outcomes are highly dependent on the quality of health systems leadership and management. These are the issues addressed in this Executive Summary of a report commissioned by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which was carried out by the Global Business School Network in 2008 and 2009 by national teams in Nigeria, Kenya and Senegal, under the leadership of Jeffrey C. Fine. The report, which is available on request from GBSN, focuses on the management training needs as they are perceived by major stakeholders, and on the contributions which African business schools can make toward meeting these needs.

WASHINGTON, DC (November 24)—The Global Business School Network (GBSN) hosted the first International Advisory Board meeting for the Karachi Business School, a proposed world-class institution to be located in the prestigious city center of Karachi, Pakistan. GBSN brought together faculty and deans from top-ranked business schools from the United States, England, France, and Germany to Washington DC to meet with business officials from Pakistan to conceptualize the new school. Faculty and administrators from business schools in Mexico, Nigeria, Slovenia, Switzerland, and the United States joined the meeting through phone conferencing to advise on areas of their expertise.
