Mexico is a member of OECD and, with Canada
and the USA, of the North American Free Trade Association. Adult illiteracy is
down to under 10 percent, a remarkable achievement, as is Mexico's successful demographic
transition. Challenges include relatively slow and uneven economic growth -
even before the current crisis - as well as rising drug-related criminality.
Food for Thought
A competitive and vibrant
post-secondary educational system in any country is a critical precursor to ensuring that
the workforce of tomorrow will possess the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to
create and manage new businesses, to privatize and restructure existing enterprises, and
to regulate business activity effectively-all elements of a robust private sector.
