Hydrocarbons are the backbone of
Algeria’s economy, accounting for roughly 60 percent of budget revenues, 30
percent of GDP and 95 percent of exports. In spite of decades of hydrocarbons
exploitation, adult literacy is only 70 percent. However, life expectancy at
birth, 70 years, is about average for the Maghreb, and so is the population’s
age structure, with 29 percent under 15 years of age.
