MERC is pleased to announce the completion of Phase I of the Management Case Study Project, funded by GRAVITAS Capital Advisors, an independent investment advisory firm, and Institut Supérieur de Management of Dakar, Senegal (ISM). This important milestone was celebrated with the release of 10 published case studies: «MANAGEMENT EN AFRIQUE, 10 CAS D'ENTREPRISES» : Un manuel pédagogique pour relever l'enseignement at the case launch in Dakar on Thursday, 7 February 2008. A complete case book is to be printed shortly, with English translations to follow.

altPhase I focused on creating management case studies rooted in the realities of Francophone West African business. The problem-solving potential of such a tool and its prospective implications on development in the region are significant. These cases add to the increasing store of locally relevant African case studies which will inform the teaching of management in business schools across the continent.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank GRAVITAS and ISM for the successful and sustainable collaboration on this project. MERC looks forward to directing further expansion of the case study library and the extension of the project to other regions on the continent.

Food for Thought

“Before the financial crisis, a lot of business schools talked the talk on ethics and their contribution to society, but did not make it a core part of their program. Now they are seeing it as a key part of their curriculum. It is important that the values of excellence, leadership, integrity and social awareness are imprinted on students by business schools – this needs to be just as important as the imparting of business skills.”

Mthuli Ncube, President of the South African Association of Business Schools and Director of Wits Business School
