GBSN is pleased to congratulate the winners of INSEAD’s African Faculty Fellowship Program for the academic year 2011/2012: Maurice K. Mutowo of the Graduate School of Management in Zimbabwe and Meshach Aziakpono of the University of Stellenbosch Business School in South Africa.

Two winning faculty members from African business schools affiliated with either the Global Business School Network or the Association of African Business Schools will spend one to two months during the coming academic year at one of INSEAD’s campuses. The Fellowships are intended for those who are interested in developing their careers in research and teaching to their fullest potential. The objectives of the Fellowships are to assist in capacity building of African business schools and to deepen INSEAD’s commitment to being “The Business School for the World. “

INSEADMaurice K. Mutowo is the Director of the Graduate School of Management in Zimbabwe. He holds a MA in Economic History and an MBA, both from the University of Zimbabwe. He will be receiving his PhD in December from the University of Cape Town’s Graduate School of Business for a dissertation titled “The Resource-based View of the Firm: A Path Dependence Investigation into the Sources of Sustainable Competitive Advantage of the University of Rhodesia, 1945-1980.” Mr. Mutowo also serves as an external examiner for the National University of Science & Technology as well as Chinhoyi University of Science and Technology in addition to participating in select consultancy work and facilitating strategic planning workshops. Mr. Mutowo will use his time with INSEAD to learn best practices for managing a business school, especially accreditation, the use of case studies, technology and other teaching approaches such as group work, and dissertation supervision. He hopes to explore the possibility for cooperation with INSEAD faculty in writing cases for use in the Graduate School of Management.

Meshach Aziakpono (PhD) is a Professor of Development Finance and the Head of Development Finance Programme at the University of Stellenbosch Business School (USB). Before joining the USB, he was Associate Professor of Economics and the Coordinator of Master’s Programme in Financial Markets in the Department of Economics and Economic History at Rhodes University, South Africa. He was recently a visiting scholar to the International Monetary Fund. He obtained his PhD degree in Economics from the University of the Free State, Bloemfontein in South Africa. His PhD Thesis titled “The Depth of Financial Integration and its Effects on Financial Development and Economic Performance of the Southern African Customs Union Countries” won the Founders’ Medal for the best PhD dissertation in Economics in South Africa. He has considerable experience in teaching and supervising at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He is a member of several international and local professional associations, including the Academy of Economics and Finance in the United States. During his time with INSEAD, Professor Aziakpono intends to focus on developing research partnerships between INSEAD and the University of Stellenbosch Business School and exploring different methods of teaching. He plans to write at least one case on specialized development finance intervention schemes such as revolving loan schemes or credit guarantee schemes. He will also be writing a paper about the transmission of financial stress from developed and emerging markets to South Africa in the context of the global financial crisis, highlighting policy implications for South Africa.
