Together with local businesses, the City of Boston, youth organizations and engaged philanthropists, Babson College will launch Lemonade Day Boston on May 1, 2011.
A national event dedicated to teaching children how to operate their own business and give back to the community through the simple act of building and running a lemonade stand, Lemonade Day Boston is destined to make a remarkable impact in the lives of Boston’s youth.
“Babson is so excited to bring Lemonade Day to Boston,” said President Leonard Schlesinger. “Lemonade Day Boston will allow the youth of Boston to experience the sense of purpose and personal power that comes from entrepreneurial success.”
“Our goal is to reach kids at a critical stage in their life,” said Houston entrepreneur and philanthropist Michael Holthouse, who began Lemonade Day in 2007. “It’s important that we teach future generations the importance of responsible business practices and instill the entrepreneurial spirit at a young age – an age that allows them to have the hope and vision to excel in the future.”
How Lemonade Day Works
- Registered youth who are working with partnering organizations receive backpacks containing an entrepreneurial workbook and a caring adult guide.
- With the guidance of the caring adult, the young entrepreneur creates a business plan, forms a budget and establishes the steps needed to run a lemonade stand.
- On May 1, young entrepreneurs have lemonade stands in Boston neighborhoods.
What Do Children Learn
- With the help of a caring adult, rich curriculum instructs the young entrepreneurs how to establish a business, including setting goals, and creating and executing a plan.
- Through the business, children learn the entrepreneurial skills necessary to be successful in the future and become contributing members of their communities.
- Most importantly, children are encouraged -- after covering their expenses and paying back their investors -- to open a youth savings account so they may save a little, spend a little and give a little, donating a portion of their profits to a local charity of their choice.
