{slide=Aspen Institute Business and Society International MBA Case Competition}

In 2002, with the support of JPMorgan, the Aspen Institute created the Walter V. Shipley Business Leadership Case Competition to honor Mr. Shipley's dedication to ethical decision making as former Chairman of the Board of Chase Manhattan Bank. In that inaugural year, just three schools were invited to participate: Columbia Business School, NYU Stern, and The Wharton School.

The competition quickly grew in prestige and size, adding student teams from five additional top tier business schools over the following six years. The program also distinguished itself from other MBA case competitions in terms of its process, the size of its scholarship prize pool, and by being one of the few case competitions that focused explicitly on the intersection of business and society.

The last round of the Walter V. Shipley Business Leadership Case Competition was held in 2008 at the Ritz-Carlton, Battery Park, in New York City.

In 2010, the Aspen Institute's Center for Business Education, with encouragement from many of the founding schools in the Shipley Competition, re-envisioned the concept of a prominent case competition focusing on the environmental, social, and ethical challenges that mainstream, for-profit business leaders face. By keeping the previous competition's "feel," but by expanding the program to 25 business schools, the 2010 Business & Society International MBA Case Competition provided an unparalleled opportunity for future business executives to reflect on the significant influence of business in society. In April of 2010, the top five finalist teams were flown to New York City to present in front of senior industry executives and to compete for their share of a $40,000 prize purse.

Due to strong demand and overwhelmingly positive feedback from the 2010 participating schools, the competition, in its current format, is now an annual event.

{slide=CIBER Case Challenge} The CIBER Case Challenge brings teams of four from around the world to compete in analyzing and presenting an international business case to judges. The CIBER Case Challenge offers an excellent opportunity for students to gain exposure to international business issues as well as to meet business students from around the globe. There are social events, such as the annual t-shirt exchange, in addition to the competition.

The CIBER Challenge case may address multiple geographical regions and multiple functional areas. The actual content of the case will be kept secret until the competition begins.

Each team must be comprised of four currently enrolled business students working on their first university degree (undergraduates). No alternates are permitted.

Each of the four members of the team must be degree-seeking undergraduate students registered within the business school at the university they are from, and each student will need to represent a different specific functional area in one of the following four categories: Finance (including Accounting), Marketing, Management, and Operations. Students are only permitted to participate as a team member in the CIBER Case Challenge one time.

Students from different universities will be mixed and formed into an entirely new team for the competition. Each four-student team will have at least one student from an international business school and three students from different U.S. schools. Students will be connected prior to the competition through web groups arranged by the CIBER Case Challenge Management Team.

Students on the same competing team will be assigned to the same hotel room throughout the competition. Consequently, we ask that sending universities create a team comprised of even numbers of males and females.

Food for Thought

A competitive and vibrant post-secondary educational system in any country is a critical precursor to ensuring that the workforce of tomorrow will possess the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to create and manage new businesses, to privatize and restructure existing enterprises, and to regulate business activity effectively-all elements of a robust private sector.
