Alan Gelb is a Senior Fellow at the Center for Global Development. He was previously held the positions of Director of Development Policy and Chief Economist for Africa at the World Bank Group. Prior to this, Mr. Gelb managed the World Bank’s research on transition countries and led the team for the 1996 World Development Report: From Plan to Market. Mr. Gelb has authored several books, and has many articles in journals on economics and also on business and sociology. These cover a wide set of subjects, including macroeconomic management, transition economies, natural resources and development, African development, firm behavior and competitiveness, and employee cooperatives. He is a former Board member of the Global Development Network (GDN) and the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC). Mr. Gelb is a South African national and a former Rhodes Scholar.
